Roding Automobile builds lightweight chassis for CITY eTAXI

Roding Automobile GmbH developed and built the chassis of the CITY eTAXI and faced a new challenge in lightweight vehicle construction and in e-mobility.

Light, small and versatile. Neutral emissions and resource-saving. The urban CITY eTAXI of the  Adaptive City Mobility (ACM) will be presented for the first time at CEBIT 2017. This vehicle concept will open up completely new paths in electro-mobility.

Initiator Paul Leibold launched the project in 2013. The goal was to realise an emission-free overall system for the transport of passengers and goods in large cities. Since the start of the project, Roding Automobile GmbH has been a partner of the ACM in the area of technology and development.

“The development and construction of complex, functional vehicles with e-drives, in which light weight and energy efficiency are the decisive requirements, is part of our core competencies”, says Ferdinand Heindlmeier, project leader and managing partner of Roding Automobile GmbH.  “We are happy to be a part of this innovative flagship project in electro-mobility.”

The CITY eTAXI for passenger transport or as cargo variant

With a length of just 3.30 m and a width of 1.48 m and a height of 1.66 m, the lightweight electric vehicle has space for three occupants. The driver sits at the front in the middle, with two passengers behind, one on the left and the other on the right. The trunk volume is 360 litres. Despite the small vehicle dimensions, the occupants can travel in comfort in the vehicle with this special seating arrangement. An innovative swivel seat makes it easy for the centrally seated driver to get in and out.

In the cargo variant without rear seats, the vehicle has a trunk volume of 1,300 litres. The small mobile miracle of space is therefore able to transport a euro pallet with a maximum load weight of 380 kg through the large cities.

Implementation of the innovative vehicle concept

The lightweight e-taxi was designed according to the EC vehicle class L7E – 450 kg maximum weight without battery system and accessories. Roding Automobile built a hybrid chassis of aluminium and CFRP fibre composite materials, thereby laying the foundation for the very light vehicle construction. A solid base made of aluminium contains important components such as the batteries. In addition to the weight, the safety of the occupants also played a key role in the development of the CFRP passenger compartment. The rims and chassis parts were also developed and produced in CFRP.

Integration of a manual battery changing concept

The integration of a modular low-volt battery changing system represented a new challenge.  The electric vehicle is supplied with the necessary energy via eight handy battery packs from our cooperation partner BMZ GmbH. Empty batteries can be replaced with charged batteries easily and by hand at battery changing stations.

The ACM project and its participants

The CITY eTAXI was developed within the framework of the ICT-EMII sponsorship project (ITK for electro-mobility).

From 20 - 24 March 2017, the roadworthy prototype of the CITY eTAXI will be presented to the general public for the first time at the CEBIT stand of the Federal Ministry of Economic and Energy in hall 6, stand 40.  Subsequently, the CITY e-TAXI will be subjected to a more long-term practical trial in Munich, the state capital of Bavaria.

In addition to Roding Automobile GmbH, one of the main participants in the project, the following organisations have also been involved in the “Flagship Project of Electro-mobility 2015” of the federal government: Ametras rentconcept GmbH, BMZ Batterien-Montage-Zentrum GmbH, EuroDesign GmbH, Fraunhofer ESK, Josef Weiss Plastic GmbH, Green City Projekt GmbH, PEM of RWTH Aachen, Siemens AG and Streetscooter GmbH
